0DTE Gamma Scalping: a retail playbook

Same-day options are the fastest instrument on the board, and dealer gamma is what shapes how they move. This guide shows how to turn the Gamma Exposure Map and Zero Gamma level into a repeatable intraday process — entries, exits, risk and the AI signals that flag setups for you.

Why gamma drives the 0DTE tape

Market makers who sell you 0DTE options hedge their delta continuously. When their net gamma is positive, that hedging buys dips and sells rips, compressing the range toward the largest open interest strikes. When net gamma flips negative, the same hedging reverses: they sell into weakness and buy into strength, which is why the sharpest intraday trends start just after price loses the Zero Gamma level. Reading that regime first is the entire edge — strategy selection comes second.

The four-step execution loop

1 · Map the gamma profile before the open

Open the Gamma Exposure Map and note three numbers: the Zero Gamma (flip) level, the Call Wall and the Put Wall. Above the flip, dealers are long gamma and hedge against the move — expect mean reversion and tight ranges. Below it, dealers are short gamma and hedge with the move — expect trend, expansion and violent intraday legs.

2 · Pick the regime, then the strategy

Long-gamma regime: fade extremes toward the mid, scalp 0DTE credit spreads or iron flies pinned between the walls. Short-gamma regime: stop fading. Buy directional 0DTE debit spreads or straight calls/puts in the direction of the break of the flip level, and let the dealer hedging do the work.

3 · Time the entry with confirmation

Gamma tells you where, momentum tells you when. Wait for price to accept above/below the level (two 5-minute closes), then confirm with RSI/MACD and a TTM Squeeze release on the Builder chart. No confirmation, no trade — 0DTE punishes early entries harder than wrong ones.

4 · Manage theta and risk like a scalper

0DTE contracts lose value by the minute. Define the exit before entry: take profit at 25–50% of debit, cut at 30–40% loss, and hard-stop by 15:30 ET before terminal gamma decay. Risk 0.5–1% of account per scalp, and never hold a short-gamma-regime credit spread into the close.

Using AI signals instead of guessing

The hard part of gamma scalping is not the theory, it is doing it in real time while levels shift. IndustrialGamma's AI Gamma Analyst reads the live exposure profile and tells you which wall is holding, whether the flip is being defended, and what the dominant regime is. The Optimizer then converts that read into a concrete structure with directional bias, probability of profit and a risk/reward view — so your job narrows to confirming momentum and managing the exit.

Five mistakes that blow up 0DTE accounts

  • Selling premium below Zero Gamma — dealer hedging accelerates the move against you.
  • Trading walls that are stale. Gamma levels shift as new 0DTE flow prints; refresh intraday.
  • Ignoring liquidity: use strikes with tight bid/ask, and always enter with limit orders.
  • Averaging down on 0DTE. There is no time for a thesis to work — cut and re-enter.
  • Sizing for the win. One oversized 0DTE scalp can erase a month of gains.

FAQ

What is 0DTE gamma scalping?

Trading options that expire the same day around dealer gamma positioning — fading price toward gamma walls in long-gamma regimes, and trading breakouts through the Zero Gamma level in short-gamma regimes.

Which tickers work best?

Index products with deep same-day chains: SPX/SPY and QQQ first, then very liquid single names such as NVDA and TSLA where 0DTE volume is meaningful.

How much capital do I need?

Defined-risk spreads let you scalp with small accounts, but slippage matters. Focus on strategies where one contract's max loss stays inside your 1% risk budget.
